More investment in TAFEs and their work with schools will boost the pipeline of skilled workers for the Victorian economy and AI-proof their future careers, the Victorian TAFE Association will tell a parliamentary inquiry today.
CEO Alex White will give evidence to the Legislative Assembly Economy and Infrastructure Committee’s Inquiry into student pathways to in-demand industries.
“As exams come to a close, thousands of students are looking forward to what’s next. TAFE offers school-leavers great pathways to a secure, well paid job,” Mr White said.
By 2034, Victoria needs more than 1.4 million new jobs in critical industries, many of which can’t be replaced by AI and automation. TAFE provides 80% of the qualifications needed for those jobs.
“The growth in VET in Schools and the VCE Vocational Major is a significant achievement for the Victorian Government. But more can and should be done to make TAFE an equal first option for all Victorian students, giving them access to strong future career prospects.
“TAFE offers school-leavers the skills and training that will set them up for life.
“TAFE graduates enjoy employment outcomes that match those of university graduates, while TAFE graduates with a Certificate IV or higher have higher median earnings than university graduates.
“TAFE qualifications can also ensure students get a career that is “AI proof”.
“New investment to build more co-located TAFE campuses with schools would help ensure students get access to these future-proofed employment-based pathways and boost the pipeline of skilled workers for the state’s economy.
“TAFE is the most effective lever the Victorian Government can utilise to develop the pipeline of skilled workers our economy needs,” Mr White said.
