As Australia’s sovereign public training provider, TAFE plays a critical role in supporting workforce development, strengthening community benefit and social licence, and ensuring Australia has the skilled workforce needed to realise the economic opportunities presented by AI and data centre investment.
While our perspective is grounded in Victoria, the issues identified are national in nature and highly relevant to Australia’s future workforce, infrastructure and economic productivity.
This submission to the Senate Standing Committees on Environment and Communications, argues that TAFE and public vocational education have been largely absent from policy discussions on AI and data centres, despite being central to training the skilled workers required to build, operate and maintain this infrastructure, as well as equipping workers across industries with practical AI capabilities.
