The Victorian TAFE Association (VTA) welcomes the Victorian Government’s 2026-27 Budget announcement of 15,000 additional Free TAFE places and campus upgrades.
The extra funding for Free TAFE recognises the Government is serious about expanding opportunities to people who want to get ahead in a career that are essential for our community and economy.
The TAFE network trains the skilled workforce required to deliver the essential services Victorians depend on every day. From building more homes and infrastructure to providing high-quality healthcare, aged care, and childcare, TAFEs are the most effective solution to the state’s workforce challenges.
Funding for the new TAFE Centres of Excellence in renewable energy, home and community care, and digital technology, will ensure learners are trained on world-class equipment and the latest industry standards.
The Victorian TAFE Association recommended funding for expanding Free TAFE places as well as infrastructure upgrades and maintenance, and free public transport for TAFE students travelling to and from campus.
The Government’s announcement demonstrates a clear commitment to strengthening the public TAFE system.
Statement attributable to Alex White, CEO of the Victorian TAFE Association:
“Many people are facing cost of living and career pressures, so this additional funding for Free TAFE places means more Victorians can access debt-free training to secure a decent job.
“Upgrading TAFE campuses and improving accessibility for learners with a disability will ensure all Victorians get the best shot in life and a chance to get skills and training in the communities they live in.”
